Summary :
From the nineties on, immigration to Canada and Québec coming from Africa has taken on a noticeable importance. This paper will examine the case of French speaking black Africa immigrants coming together inside Pentecostal assemblies. The GRIMER group puts this case study inside a comparative research program whose main interest lies in understanding the function of the religious factor in the process of recomposition of identities in recently arrived ethnodenominational communities. It will be shown that in the case of this religious group constituting about the third of this African immigration this denominational belonging plays a much stronger role than a simple identity reference, functioning as a pivotal existential axis. Combined with a simplified scheme of transnational African identity, it strengthens the difficult integration process et plays the role of a normative filter in the dual process of accepting and rejecting certain traits of the welcoming society. In so doing a new identity model is formed in the context of a very liberal and pluralistic society itself in the ongoing process of redefining its contemporary identity in reference to its Roman Catholic roots. Résumé :
L’immigration de provenance africaine au Canada et au Québec se manifeste tout particulièrement depuis les années 1990. Dans le cadre d’une recherche visant à décrire et comprendre le jeu du référent religieux dans la recomposition de la conscience ethnique en œuvre aux sein de communautés ethnoconfessionnelles d’arrivée récente au Québec, la communication examinera le cas d’immigrants originaires d’Afrique noire et qui se rassemblent au sein d’Églises de type évangéliques ou pentecôtistes. On y découvrira que cette appartenance confessionnelle qui concerne environ le tiers de l’immigration africaine constitue beaucoup plus qu’une simple référence identitaire, mais sert de référence existentielle centrale. Combinée à un schéma simplifié de l’identité transnationale africaine elle conforte le processus d’intégration et sert de filtre normatif dans l’assimilation de certains traits de la société d’accueil et le rejet de certains autres au profit d’une proposition d’un nouveau modèle identitaire dans le système global d’une société pluraliste d’origine majoritaire catholique et française en pleine redéfinition. Approche ethnographique.
