Résumé

This article aims to paint a picture of migration and information and communication technologies (ICTs), from both a scientific and social perspective. We first outline the relevance of this area of research by pointing out that technology is necessary for the integration of migrants in two respects: 1) as an inherent aspect of Western society, technology plays a vital role not only in the social integration of migrants, but also in their professional and language integration; 2) as an integration tool, technology represents an important means for migrants to access a range of services and, in turn, opportunities for empowerment within the host society. A characterization chart of formal and informal devices using ICTs in relation to migration is used to illustrate current social trends addressing this issue. We then describe the different scientific fields and concepts related to migration and ICTs. We conclude by proposing some promising avenues for future research on migration and ICTs.
