Résumé

The problem of the origin of pidgin and creole genesis has been addressed from different points of view over the last century. This paper summarises and evaluates the various theories proposed to account for the genesis of these languages. The paper begins with a discussion of features that any theory aiming at explaining the origin of pidgin and creole languages must be able to account for. Then, the competing theories of creole genesis are evaluated against these features.
