Résumé

Introduction: Examining the criminological characteristics of women who have been involved in sex trading can help us to develop gender-specific knowledge from a criminological perspective. This study aims to examine the scientific literature of their criminological characteristics and helps bridge the gap between scattered evidence and future research needs. Method: A scoping review was conducted by searching four databases for literature published between January 2000 and July 2023. Results: The scoping review yielded 59 peer-reviewed articles, predominantly from the United States where activities related to the sex trade are largely criminalized. The results reveal a high prevalence of drug and sex-trade related offenses, the experience of victimization related to these offenses, and frequent involvement with the criminal justice system. Conclusion: The specific aspects of the experience of sex trading (e.g., victimization, substance use) should be taken into account in the development and implementation of interventions for this subpopulation. Public significance: This review synthesizes criminological findings on women with experiences in sex trading, highlighting victim–offender overlap, revolving door pattern and unrecorded delinquency. It also points to a gap in the literature, as existing evidence is predominantly U.S.-based, with an absence of studies from Canada, suggesting the relevance of further research in decriminalized contexts.
