Recent developments in the online media environment have led to many changes in the communication practices of civil society actors. These changes become particularly visible when we look at social media, which bring together hundreds of millions of users. The unprecedented networking and sharing opportunities brought about by these media channels have contributed to the emergence of new forms of citizen engagement made possible through "networks of indignitation," social movements, and political uprisings (e.g., the Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street, and the Indignados) (Castells 2015).
